Students help divert thousands of pounds of food waste from landfill

CLEVELAND — According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), food is the single most common material sent to landfills.

One way to divert food waste going into a landfill is through composting.

It’s a process students at Manchester High School, located outside of Akron, have become proficient at.

Composting is a biological process that turns organic material into a nutrient rich soil.

Charissa Soful, the biology teacher at Manchester High School, started the composting program 15 years ago.
