Hometown heroes: Ohio natives talk about their call to serve, future in the Navy

“I really focused on 9/11. That’s kind of what drew me to join the Navy,” BM1 Austin Wildermuth said.

It’s a day we won’t forget, and for many like Austin Wildermuth, it changed their life in a major way. The Lancaster, Ohio, native was in fifth grade during 9/11, and it became a call to serve.

“Now I’m a certified firefighter in the state of North Carolina and while doing full-time active-duty Navy. So, I kind of have both of my childhood dreams all accomplished while still getting to do what I love,” he said.

Wildermuth works on Landing Craft Air Cushion assault vehicles, and they’re vital to moving people and gear.
